Google Ad Sense is an advertising program that was launched in the middle of 2003 by Google, the popular search engine. Google acts as an intermediary between a vast number of advertisers and an equally impressive number of website owners. The relevancy of ads placed by Ad Sense varies on all sorts of criteria, but most ads are usually very relevant to the page on which the ad is displayed. For example, the ads on this page should be related to the internet, advertising, and/or the Google Ad Sense program itself. Advertisers pay Google a certain amount for each time one of their ads are clicked. Google keeps a portion of this payment and passes on the rest to the owner of the website itself. Page views of the advertisements are irrelevant in terms of generating revenue in the program - commissions are only generated when internet users actually click on the ads themselves. Although Google is powerful and easy to use, here are some tips you can use to get the best results:

  • Don't get stuck on one search term or phrase; if your first search does not give you the type of results you are looking for, try different words or different phrases.

  • Putting quotation marks around a phrase in the search box requires all resulting pages to include that exact phrase to be located somewhere on the page.

  • Keep in mind that most search engines work with AND as the default operator; this means that any words you enter in the search box must exist on the resulting pages (unless you put a hyphen before a word - see following tip)

  • Including a hyphen before a word means that pages that include that word will be omitted from the search results. So if you search for: wise -geek, you will be given pages that include the word 'wise' but exclude the word 'geek'

  • The order of the words you enter into the search box affects results, so try to enter the most important word first.

  • Case is generally irrelevant for searches

  • If you enter dictionary words, your search terms are listed in the bar below the search box on the results page, and clicking on the word sends you to the definition of the word itself.

  • You can enter math equations such as 27/3 and Google will provide the answer.

  • You can enter a unit conversion such as 33 Celsius in Fahrenheit and Google will provide the answer.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the art of creating Web pages that will rank high in search engine returns. SEO is accomplished by optimizing certain sections or "elements" in the HTML coding of each page. These sections are specifically read by search engines and, depending on the level of optimization, can create a greater likelihood of free referral traffic. There are several methods and opinions about how a web page should be optimized, and much will depend on the type of site, its content, purpose and competition, if relevant. Each page title should use one or more of these unique keywords for maximum search engine optimization.

Since SEO relies so heavily on keywords, the most important keywords and keyphrases should be used liberally in the first two paragraphs of the content of each page, then sprinkled throughout the body. The last paragraph of every page should also be keyword rich. A suggested rule of thumb is to reach for keyword density between 5-15%. Judgment must be used to invoke keywords liberally without getting too repetitive. It may also help to use bold or italics on a keyword or two, but avoid doing this to excess. Whether performing your own search engine optimization or hiring a contractor, with the billions of web pages on the Internet and the hundreds or even thousands of "hits" that can be returned from any single online search, SEO is a necessity for anyone looking to benefit from search engine traffic.

This will let you know if your site is getting a top ranking in the various search engines, and what other sites are also in the top ten. In addition to search engines, traffic is also generated when people visit another site, and click on a link to your own site. A search optimization tool may also include a utility that finds all the links pointing to your site. Search optimization software may also assist you in submitting your site to the major search engines. Search engines crawl the entire web using a program called a spider, indexing every site it comes across. Eventually, it will come to your page, but submitting your site's URL manually will make sure each search engine knows you are there. Creating a good web site that gets the most traffic is not completely an automated process however. The search optimization software is certainly an excellent and necessary tool, but don't expect it to do everything for you. You need to select keywords that are going to get the greatest return on the search engines, and the best ones are not always the most obvious. A common but erroneous strategy is to fill a page with hundreds of keywords that only marginally relate to the content. This does not generate quality leads, and will not put your site at the top of the list. Choose your keywords strategically, and then use your search optimization software to do the rest.

Note that some search engines may penalize a site for over optimization. If you stuff your page with excessive keywords, for example, the search engine algorithm may not take your page seriously. In the end, if you perform some honest search engine optimization (sometimes referred to as "white hat optimization") and make your content well-suited for visitors, you will eventually rank well.
